First Post

This is an attempt to chart the progress of a wildly accelerated (13.5-month) Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) program undertaken at The Super Dooper University School of Nursing undertaken by the author, me, a somewhat unlikely candidate.

Growing up, I did not know any nurses and it certainly was not considered a particularly valid career choice in my high school, college or even graduate school program. The thing to do (if, of course, you for some reason have not chosen medicine) is occupational health or physical therapy or, even better, public health, which is the field I chose. However, the more I learned about health, the public, the public's health and our health system the more I learned about nursing and its fundamental importance to the success of our health systems. And so I went on and on about how important nurses are and how they are overworked and underpaid and something-really-should-be-done. Then I realized that if I wanted to learn about nursing and what it would take to make this component of our health care system better, I would have to become one myself. Once the idea actually occurred to me, I seized on it. That was in December 2001 and now it is April 2004 and I am about to start my nursing program in 6 weeks. In the intervening 3 years, I've had the chance to work with nurses and get a better picture of what is ahead. I am excited and apprehensive and hoped that by forcing myself to write about my experiences, I could make the most of this 14-month programme and take a little time to figure out what's what. So: this is what's what. Stay tuned!
